The ties in sericulture between Sheki and Uzbekistan, which date back centuries, are being maintained today through scientific cooperation.
Gudrat Bakirov, PhD in Biology, docent, the head of the Mulberry silkworm breeding department at Sheki Regional Scientific Center of ANAS discussed the significance of Sheki-Uzbekistan cooperation in the field of sericulture in an interview with ARB TV.
He noted that the Sheki Regional Scientific Center regularly conducts research aimed at developing silkworm breeds that are more resilient and better adapted to the region's climatic conditions. To this end, hybrid combinations are being created between breeds imported from Uzbekistan and those adapted to the local environment in Azerbaijan.
The primary objective is to produce silkworms that are better suited to the local climate and more resistant to diseases and adverse environmental factors.
Thus, Sheki and Uzbekistan, historically linked by the Silk Road continue to sustain those connections today through cooperation in science, expertise, and sericulture.
