Ecological monitoring of erosion processes was conducted in the village of Orta Zayzid in Sheki

On July 16, 2026, Elvin Garayev, an employee of Ecological Geography department of Sheki Regional Scientific Center of ANAS, conducted ecological monitoring in the village of Orta Zayzid in Sheki. This was reported to shrem.az by the head of the department, PhD in Geography Qafqaz Agabalayev.

He stated that during the monitoring, intensively developing ravine formation and erosion processes in the southeastern part of the village were studied.

During the observations, it was determined that landslides occurred as a result of erosion, the root system of large-stemmed trees was eroded, and trees fell.

It was noted that depositional cones consisting mainly of yellow soil and eroded clay shale materials were collected in the resulting gorge. The height of these cones reached 1.70 meters in some areas.

It was also noted that despite the relatively solidification of the soil layer in the foothill areas where erosion occurs, the rocks mainly consist of soft yellow soil and eroded clay shales. The almost complete absence of solid and stable rock layers creates favorable conditions for the more intensive development of landslides and erosion processes.

Measurements were also carried out in the valleys formed in the area as part of the monitoring. As a result of the measurements, it was determined that the depth of the small valley formed as a result of erosion processes is 3.0–3.20 meters, the width is 4–5 meters, and the length is approximately 300–350 meters.

Qafqaz Agabalayev noted that these indicators confirm that erosion processes in the area are active. According to him, in the future, regular monitoring is necessary to prevent the negative impact of these processes on settlements, agricultural lands and vegetation.
