As a result of intense rainfall on May 21, 2026, the water level and volume in the Shin River basin have increased sharply. During the rainfall, floodwaters from Dostdag Gorge caused serious damage to the surrounding areas.
This was reported to shrem.az by the head of the Ecological Geography Department of Sheki Regional Scientific Center of ANAS, Ph.D. in Geography Gafgaz Agabalayev.
He said that during the incident, an employee of the department, Elvin Garayev, conducted observations in the area and recorded the risks posed by floodwaters to agriculture and infrastructure.
The head of the department also reported that hail fell in the areas of Shin, Bash Goynuk and Bash Layisqi villages of Sheki and caused serious damage to agricultural and arable lands.
He noted that as a result of natural events, soil erosion in the coastal part of the Shin River and flooding of village roads were also recorded.
Qafqaz Agabalayev also stated that observations in the field are continuing in order to promptly assess the situation.
