On January 17, 2025, an online scientific conference on the topic "January 20, which has become a symbol of national unity and patriotism" was held under the organization of Lankaran Scientific Center of ANAS.
The conference was attended by scientists from Central Scientific Library of ANAS, Ganja Branch of ANAS, Sheki Regional Scientific Center of ANAS, Lankaran Scientific Center of ANAS, the Institute of Oriental Studies of ANAS, Shamakhi branch of the Azerbaijan State University of Political Science, and the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations.
Director of Sheki Regional Scientific Center, PhD in physics, docent Yusif Shukurlu, in his speech titled "January 20 is our blood memory", noted that January 20 is a glorious history, a day of awakening, when the Azerbaijani people living under the captivity of the Soviet empire raised their voices for freedom and demonstrated courage for sovereignty, and emphasized that our people experienced January 20, 1990, as both a tragedy and a page of heroism. The speaker drew attention to the Statement of the national leader Heydar Aliyev dated January 21, 1990, and stated that that Statement was the first political assessment of this tragedy that introduced our determination for independence and national identity to the world.
Senior Researcher of the Department of History, Archaeology and Epigraphy of Sheki RSC, PhD in history Akif Mammadli, in his report titled "Our Path to Freedom Passes Through January 20," said that the history of January 20 was the beginning of the declaration of the desire for freedom, which draws strength from our national ideology, on the path of Azerbaijan's independence, and demonstrated to the world the determination of the people to endure the most difficult trials and even to be martyrs for the sake of the freedom and independence of the Motherland.
Elchin Valiyev, a research fellow at the Department of History, Archaeology and Epigraphy, speaking on the topic "The January 20 Tragedy on the Agenda of the World Community," said that the bloody tragedy that befell the Azerbaijani people received its first political and legal assessment thanks to the great leader Heydar Aliyev, and immediately after the incident, the national leader made a revealing and courageous statement accusing the organizers of the bloody tragedy before the world community. The speaker provided information about the role of young people in propagating the tragedy and the exceptional activities of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev and President Ilham Aliyev in raising the modern young generation in a patriotic spirit.
In conclusion, the participants emphasized the importance of continuously holding such commemorative events and noted the importance of preserving national memory.
