On November 5, 2024, the scientific worker of the "Ecological biophysics" department of Sheki RSC of ANAS, Zarintaj Shukurova, on the topic "Bioecology of Stephanitis pyri, a pest of the Prunus avium (cherry) tree, which is the main food plant of the wild silkworm Saturnia pyri, and features of its control" report was heard.

Scientific workers of Sheki RSC participated in the seminar.

The speaker made a short report on the progress of the research work he conducted on the basis of the mutual scientific-research agreement between the ARSR Institute of Zoology and Sheki RSC of ANAS.

Zarintaj Shukurova brought to attention the information about the biological classification of Stephanitis pyri (Fabricius 1775) pest of seed and stone fruit plants, the stages of development, the spread of the species in its geographical area, the damage potential, and the analysis of the ecology of the species.

Zarintaj Shukurova also emphasized that Saturnia pyri, a wild silkworm bred for use in sericulture, caused serious damage to a number of fruit plants belonging to the Rosaceae family, which are fodder plants, and that this silkworm may have a negative impact on the fodder base in the future.

In the end, the speaker talked about the preventive measures that can be taken to protect plants from the Stephanitis pyri pest and made suggestions.

Questions of interest to the participants were answered in the discussion seminar.
